2021 Summer Cup – Beware the Wounded Golfer

Truer words have never been spoken as Brian Hunter claims the 2021 Summer Cup. Brian is back golfing after a few months recouping from an injury inflicted in FNQ (fighting off a crocodile I believe). Brian was a bit nervous after his round after hearing of Colin Haynes fantastic 42 points, but held on by one point to claim the victory. Well done Brian.

Chris Payne was amongst 4 players who finished one point behind, squandering yet another first round lead. What will happen in the upcoming President’s Trophy?

Jim Thorpe Veterans Trophy

Open to Men aged 55 years and over, this event is played in conjunction with the Men’s Midweek Monthly Cup. The player with the highest aggregate Stableford points from their best 6 rounds over the year is declared the winner.

After participating in 10 of the 11 rounds played, being one of our Members for 42 years, and never having his name up in gold lettering this year’s winner is most deserved – congratulations Michael McCormick. Michael finished with a total score of 216 to win by 6 points from John Burns (210) and Peter Brideson (205).

#DoingItForJarrod Day

Thank You to all Members who participated on both days (Aug 21 and Dec 19). Through your generous donations we raised $623 for Challenge (supporting kids with cancer).

All Members who entered either of the days (including those who couldn’t participate in the PM of Aug 21) went in to a raffle for a prize pack provided by Challenge. Congratulations to Ken Gutterson who’s name was drawn out. I’ll see you in the New Year Ken and pass on your prize.

If any Members would like to assist in making this event bigger and better in 2022 please let me know.

Pace of Play

Always a topic of conversation, with increased numbers on the course please be conscious and courteous about your position in the field.

A few pointers from Golf Australia –

Play at Good Pace and Keep Up – Players should play at a good pace. It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it is apparent that the group behind can play faster, it should invite the faster moving group to play through.

Be Ready to Play – Players should be ready to play as soon as it is their turn to play. When playing on or near the putting green, they should leave their bags or carts in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green.

Lost Ball – If a player believes their ball may be lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, to save time, they should play a provisional ball. Players searching for a ball should signal the players in the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for three minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue play until that group has passed and is out of range.

In addition to the above remember that:

  • Ready Golf is now a recognised practice in the Rules of Golf
  • You can move to the next tee after you have putted out. You don’t have to wait for all your group before moving from the green
  • Pick up if you’re out of shots
  • Mark your card after you have teed off or are waiting for a playing partner to tee off
  • Encourage your playing partners to keep pace with the group in front

MiClub provides Players with timing expectations whilst on the course and Golf Ops with the tools to review round times. In fairness to all who do the right thing, if we see that there are groups/players that are consistently behind pace I will touch base with these groups/players and discuss how we can assist them in reducing their times.

What a Year it’s Been

Thank you to all of our Members who have supported our Golf Ops team and provided feedback and positive suggestions as we’ve navigated yet another year of disturbances. In 2022 the time spent on dealing with these past disturbances can be put towards growing the positive experiences we have both on and off course!

Jo McPhee, Captain on Behalf of Golf Ops Team
