Kangaroos damaging the greens

Posted on: 30 April

Most members will have noticed the extensive damage to our greens. This is caused by our large population of kangaroos who appear to be feeding on the lush grass. We have done some research and have spoken to Broken Hill Golf and Country Club who have a population of more than 4,000 kangaroos to see if there is a remedy to the solution.

In reality the problem is caused by dry conditions and a lack of feed so the roos move towards greener options and this is noticeable by the extensive amount of droppings being generated.
The options are very limited and are:

  • Introduce dog patrols.  This is clearly an un-favoured option as it spooks the animals potentially causing injury.
  • Introduce random noise blasts using air cannons.  This too is not a favoured option for the same reasons as above.
  • Try feeding stations.  This option was tried by Broken Hill and exacerbated the problem as more kangaroos joined in to the feast.

Given all of the above and the lack of real solutions we will try for a short period the introduction of feeding stations to discourage the kangaroos from going onto the greens.  Apparently kangaroos are fussy eaters and like Alfalfa or Lucerne Hay.  At $25 a bail this could become a costly exercise but it will be trialled and hopefully in the not too distant future we will get some rain to assist with growth in the rough.
