Women’s Golf News 5-1-24

Posted on: 5 January

Hello everyone,

Summer golf has proved to be interesting weatherwise.

The Wednesday Monthly Medal was played in warm, sultry, and humid conditions under cloudy skies.

We enjoyed brief glimpses of sun followed by looming threatening dark clouds toward the end of the round.

Swan update: one swan sighted on the 4th on Wednesday.

However, a big surprise was instore for those playing golf on Monday January 1…..we had swans on the dam behind the 4th.

Thanks Adrienne for the video. Yay !

Now to the results. There were 22 entrants in the Stroke competition.

RESULTS: MONTHLY MEDAL (January)

Winner of the Monthly Medal and A Grade was Suzanne Velk with a great score of 66.

A Grade runner-up was Marg Ivory also with a great score of 74.

Winner for B-Grade was Sue De Jonge score of 73.

B-Grade runner-up was Jenny McSwain score of 73.

This is an invitation event for teams of three players from other clubs to compete for our Challenge Bowl trophy. Medway Golf Club team won in 2023.

We host this event; we will have one team of three players to represent us. Last years A, B, and C Grade Club Champions, Kathy Richards, Marg Ivory, and Jenny Malberg.

If you have friends at other clubs who may like to enter a team in our Bowl, keep an eye out later this week for the 2024 Challenge Bowl Invitation attached to an email, and you can forward to them directly.

As I said last week I send our invitation officially to around 65 clubs across the city and state, but at some smaller clubs their internal communication to their ladies is sometimes lacking.

Our members traditionally provide homemade slices, tarts, and cakes for dessert. Our desserts are famous We will have a sign-up sheet in the locker room in early Feb.

Members Out and About

Two great members responded to my call out last week for pics of you playing whilst away on holidays. Thank you both.

  • Christine Barraclough sent us a couple of pics of her playing the Cammeray Golf Club in Cremorne in Sydney. A very pretty course.
  • Gudrun Wilkinson set us pics of the Norseman Golf Club in outback Western Australia (200kms inland from Esperance).

Inside my yellow circle is the “green” and the flag. Looks like the ball would run on that course and definitely no chance of soggy shoes there Gudrun.

Club Championships 2024

(See below information from the GGC Website – I have cut it for this message.

There is more information on the website.)

The General Committee of the Gisborne Golf Club have made the decision to move the 2024 Championships from February to November following the recommendations of the Golf Operations and the Greens Sub-Committees.

In pre-planning for the 2024/2025 syllabus, the dates for the Club Championships have been pencilled in for November 9, 16, 23 and 30.Both the Women’s and the Men’s Championships will use a similar format to that used in 2023 where members may nominate to play the early rounds on a Wednesday/Thursday or a Saturday. As in previous years, the Final Day would see the top 8 seeded players in all grades playing their final round from a set tee time.Following the introduction last year of the multi day format and our Men and Women playing the final day on a Saturday together, which was positively received by members, the last day of the Championships will be a celebration of the Club and the Club Champions. We would like to think that there will be a bigger turnout this year to support all the finalists and make this a marquee day for the club.
