We don’t need to tell you that golf can be a pretty challenging sport, and the nature of the sport means it also has some awesome musculoskeletal benefits, such as improved balance, muscle tone and endurance, and increased bone density (when walking while playing). Another big tick for golf is that it’s generally considered a low-risk, low-impact sport.

I know you’re hanging in there for the but, so here it is…. BUT Like with any sport, injuries can occur. For golfers, the risk of acute injury is pretty low, with the most common injuries being overuse injuries. The areas more frequently affected are the lower back, wrist, and elbow.

Did you know that for both professional and amateur golfers, the lower back takes the cake for the highest injured area? Perhaps not a big surprise considering 75-85% of all Australians will experience low back pain at some stage in their life.

Low back pain is a pretty complex and multifactorial condition so we can’t really play the blame game on a single event or factor. What we can do, however, is look into a person’s lifestyle and pinpoint some potential contributors.

Let’s consider the golf swing. Because the swing is an asymmetrical, multi-joint movement that dynamically loads the body, coordination and muscular strength are put under strain. The rotational aspect of the swing can increase the pressure on the spine and muscles which may place you at increased risk for developing or worsening back pains.

There may be some underlying mobility (soft tissue and joints) or motor (muscle control) related issues that may increase your risk of overuse injuries such as low back pain, but with correct physical care and preparation, the body can adapt to manage the forces of the golf swing.

If you are interested in having an assessment to check out what we do and if we’re the right fit for you, all Gisborne Golf Club Members can receive 50% off their initial consultation with us, totaling $47.50 (valued at $95)
