Board Events – The next chapter begins

Posted on: 1 May

As mentioned at the 2022 AGM, we have reviewed our Board Events with the view to allowing all Members regardless of gender to participate in them where practical.

Of our 26 Board Events 19 are open to Men, 4 to Women and the remaining 3 are Open.

Historically a number of these Events precluded women from participating but with the World Handicapping System not differentiating between genders there is no reason for this to continue.

We are also utilising Golf Australia’s Vision 2025 strategy and the Australian Human Rights Commission’s guidelines to develop and implement a progressive diversity and inclusion policy at our Club, and this is one step in achieving this. Dave Plunkett will be heading up the Sub-Committee that will manage the development of this policy.

Effective June 1 we intend for the following Events to be open to all Members (subject to respective membership category eligibility):

  • Winter Cup
  • Summer Cup
  • Captain’s Trophy
  • President’s Trophy
  • WED Robinson Memorial Knockout
  • Jim Thorpe Veterans Trophy
  • Mid Week Monthly Trophy (Thursdays)
  • Murray Heard Trophy
  • AJ Harlock Midweek Championship
  • Ray Keane 4BBB Knock Out (from 2023)

The ‘Board Events’ page on our website will be updated with new information.

For the time being there are some events that will remain gender specific (such as the Club Championships) and others that require further review to ensure opening them to all Members is workable (eg. Scratch Match Play).

The Saturday Monthly Cup (Men), Saturday Monthly Medal (Women) and Wednesday Monthly Medal (Women) will remain gender specific at this point in time. This constitutes a Special Measure under the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (the Act).

The Bert & Doris Storey Trophy, historically a single Stableford round with separate Men and Women competitions, is presently being reviewed and we will provide an update once the review is completed.

If you have any feedback or queries relating to the golf aspect implementation please contact Jo McPhee (captain@gisbornegolf.com.au or 0400 504 505) by May 15.

Golf Australia’s website holds a lot of information around Vision 2025 and we encourage you to review it if it is of interest to you (which we hope it is). If you have any queries that you can’t find the answer on, please contact Dave Plunkett (davidrplunkett@gmail.com or 0407 885 008) who will assist.

Keep an eye out for further Vision 2025 updates as they come to hand.

Regards,
Alastair Boustead
