RIP Gisborne NWRGA Pennant Hope & Dreams

Posted on: 16 February

Dearly Beloved,

We are gathered here today, to say farewell to the Gisborne Pennant Teams Hopes & Dreams of winning the 2022 North-West Regional Pennant final.

As we reflect upon the year, I am sure a tear will appear in the corner of your eye as you recall the 1st round thrashing by Melton Park; but a smile will grace your face, as you fondly recall how they bounced back the next week thrashing RAAF 10/2.

Most will shake their heads in dismay as they laugh at David Davis wearing hiking boots at Bacchus as we silenced the Marsh in round 3.

Goose bumps will appear on your arms as you bask in the memory of the gallant win against ladder leaders Werribee Park, which saw Hogan’s Hero’s move into 2nd spot, and the teams “Hopes & Dreams” never looked healthier.

But sadness struck as the Pennant Team succumbed to the pressure and let the last Home and Away match slip between their fingers, losing to Eynesbury, also giving them the advantage of a home final. Even the 8/7 win by Johnny Windows or the much talked about Hogan eagle on # 6 were not enough to get the team over the line to host a home final.

In the Pennants Teams Hope & Dreams last hours at Eynesbury, they fought hard to survive, but the away game disadvantage was just too much. A missed a 10 cm put on the 18th to win a game, but not the match, saw the Gisborne Pennant Team Hopes & Dreams take its last breath for 2022, losing 7/5.

It is heartbreaking so much talent, promise and potential was taken from the competition so soon; Pennant golf can seem so unfair sometimes Damm you Pennant Golf (as I wave my fist at the sky).

So, as you look at the 18th green this Saturday, raise your glass in memory of the Gisborne Pennant teams “Hopes & Dreams” of 2022.

Remember the great victories; remember the men who sacrificed their Sundays’ and fought hard, representing the Gisborne Golf club in the highest professional manner possible. These men now walk the course with hollow hearts and sadness as they reflect on what could have been. Be kind to these men – they gave their absolute all. Never have a finer group of men walked the fairways of the North West Regional Pennant courses; they are Chris Payne, Matty Laing, Jarryd Apap, Andrew Willmott, Will Oram, David Davis, Ken Baddeley, Matty Dean, Jack Rowling, Rod Simpkin, Evan Boorman, Johnny Windows, Kirk Douglas, Geordy Nolan, Kieran Haddad, The Colonel, Gary Hoffman, John Burns, John Gamwell and Mark Buckley.

The Colonel.
