Round 1: North West Pennant – Gisborne Vs Northern.

“I’m playing Pennant in the Rain, just playin’ Pennant in the rain.
What a glorious feeling to be playing Pennant again”.

The Northwest Regional Pennant season commenced on Sunday, with Gisborne hosting Northern and 22,000 cats and dogs that fell from the sky.

The course was like Lake Eyre, with the greens and fairways covered in sheets of water. After 30 minutes, Kom blew his horn, and the teams marked their balls and came back into the club house.

The team grouped together as one in the Pro Shop to make a final decision; to play or not to play.

The rain eased and the call was made to head back out and play; and play we did.

History was made with our first Woman, Moon “Flash” Gordan playing her first match in the Pennant competition. Her caddie, Roberta Henry provided support and encouragement, but unfortunately, Moon is a dry track runner and went down on the 13th.

Surprisingly, wet track runner Matty Laing, who won the Monthly cup in similar conditions stumbled in his match.

Glen Ford had a tough opponent, so he tripped him on the 6th hole, resulting in a torn hammy. Fordy took out that match.

The Scottish bookshop, Angus Robertson was quite surprised we didn’t like playing in the rain. He thought it quite a mild day and went on to square out his match on the 18th.

Other winners were Jamie Wills, Johnny Windows, Shane McPhee, Matt “Forrest” Dean and the Colonel.

Gisborne won 6 ½ to 5 ½ .
