Golf Rules Update 3

Posted on: 27 November

Hi Members Rules update No 3

Spoon drains at Gisborne Golf club are classed as Abnormal course condition (formerly ground under repair).  Relief may be taken if your ball is in the drain, or your stance and swing is affected by the drain.

Where to drop depends on whether you are right-handed or left-handed. In the case of the spoon drain running up the RHS of the 11th fairway, a right-hand player’s reference point is on the Left-hand side of the drain at the nearest point that gives complete relief, and you may drop within one club length of that point. A Left-handed player would drop on the Right side of the drain.

Note that this is a local rule only and other clubs may or may not have this rule.

Garden Beds are also Abnormal course conditions at our club. Relief may be taken if the ball is in the garden bed, or your stance or swing is affected by the bed or anything growing in the bed. The reference point is the nearest point of complete relief and drop within one club length of that point. It is not necessary to find your ball in a garden bed to obtain relief, but you must have at least 95% certainty that your ball is in the garden bed.

Note again that many clubs (e.g., Northern) do not have this local rule and garden beds are an integral part of the general area at these clubs.

When visiting another club it is always advisable to check that clubs local rules.

Best Regards
