“ A True Rose Amongst Many Gisborne Roses” – Denise Dunn

Posted on: 15 January

I was born in Lithgow NSW and moved to Melbourne when I was 6 years old due to my fathers transfer from the Small Arms Factory to the Ammo factory in Maribyrnong.

We settled in Niddrie where I went to St John Bosco primary school and then onto St Columba’s in Essendon. My Dad always said that was a waste of a lot of money 😂😂.

I spent most of my teens at the Buckley Park Tennis Club and still have a lot of my friends from those days.

I joined the Commonwealth Bank in 1972 where I held a number of different positions. They paid me to leave in 2004 and in 2006 they paid me to come back on a part time basis. Last year I decided to retire and play more golf after nearly 48 years.

I currently live in a small house in Ascot Vale which I love. I spend most of my time in my garden if I’m not at golf.

I was lucky enough to travel in my younger years as I did not marry until I was 42. I’ve travelled most of Australia. In 1988 I went to Europe via USA for 3 months with a group of friends . In 1995 I travelled to USA and Canada and in 2012 I went to the USA with my 3 sisters and a cousin to celebrate my sisters 60th.

My husband, Russell, a 10 pound Pom was not interested in overseas travel. We did most of our holidays fishing and golfing together which we both loved to do. I always push the young one to take up golf if their partners play as I think it is one of the best things you can do together. I remember a colleague of mine, who loved golfing and fishing, saying to me after a weekend  how lucky I was. He said that when he met his wife as a 20 year old he didn’t look at her as a golf mate or a fishing companion 😂

In 2000 I convinced Russell to join Gisborne Golf Club. My parents, Kath and Graham Wood, were part of the Niddrie Catholics who joined the club in the late seventies, early eighties. The Lanes, the Kennedy’s, the Arundels, the Ginnivans, the Dows and the Farrells were all part of the Niddrie Catholics from St John Bosco. They had a fantastic time there where it was more a country golf club.

My whole family , 3 sisters and 1 brother, are all golfers but most of them belong to Medway golf Club.

In the early days at Gisborne Russ and myself played every Saturday morning with the Albanys, the Thompson’s, the Crimmins and Rocky Valente. Sunday was mainly with Mum and Dad. Dad passed away in 2008 and Mum is 94 and has recently gone into Aged Care.

Unfortunately Russ was diagnosed with Prostrate cancer in 2006 and passed away in 2016. The Gisborne golf club was my saving grace at this difficult time. All the ladies were there for me.

In 2017 I travelled to Bali and in 2019 I travelled to South America for 4 weeks with Robyn Tucker and Kate Atlas. It was an amazing holiday.

I have been very lucky to be a member of Gisborne. I spent 6 years on the ladies committee as the ladies treasurer and got to know how the club ran.

I’m not the greatest golfer. I got to 14 handicap for 1 week 😂. Always looking at ways to improve, just ask anyone who know me.

Never had a hole in one but have won a couple of board events, ie weekend champion and McGregor foursomes. I have been involved in the pennant as a player but more recently as a caddy. We won Div 4 twice which was exciting.

The Gisborne Golf club isn’t about the golf so much, it is about the friendships that you make and those friendships last a lifetime.

PS – I forgot to have children 😀😀
